Dear Defenders of Women’s Rights,
While California voters rejected Proposition 4, which would limit a young woman's ability to get an abortion, Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban was passed. With the election of Barack Obama, the right wing has vowed to step up their efforts to push their anti-woman, anti-queer, and anti-immigrant agenda.
The rightwing remains on the offensive, emboldened by the Prop 8 “victory,” and for the fifth year running will be coming to San Francisco on Saturday, January 24 for their annual “Walk for Life—West Coast.” But, as in previous years, Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR) activists will be organizing a multi-issue response to the anti-abortion, anti-queer demonstrators. We are initiating a January 24th Coalition to bring together local and national community groups and activists to organize a counter demonstration with one united voice. We need you to join this important effort and to send the message that the San Francisco Bay Area stands for reproductive rights, queer rights and immigrant rights, and that neither the church nor the state can restrict our freedom and health.
This year's demonstration will be a focus on coming out against the right wing: "Stop the War on Women! Unite to Fight the Right." Please join community groups and individuals in demanding: Free Abortion on Demand, No Forced Sterilization; Defend Immigrant Rights, Stop the Minutemen; Civil Rights for Queers, Rescind Prop 8!
In past years our efforts were endorsed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, San Francisco Labor Council, ACCESS, East Bay NOW, Young Workers United, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, Radical Women, GABNet, Code Pink, Women of Color Resource Center, San Francisco Atheists, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Choice USA the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and many more.
Here’s what we need you to do:
1. Commit to coming to and bringing others to the next organizing meeting: Wednesdays, January 7, 14, and 21 at 7 pm at 1260 Mission St., between 8th and 9th Streets in San Francisco. Also keep posted on meetings by adding yourself and your organization to the BACORR yahoo group, by emailing bacorrinfo@yahoo.com.
2. Endorse the counter-protest of the “Walk for Life—West Coast”. We ask for a $25 donation, but any amount is appreciated. Please make checks out to: Women’s Choice Clinic and mail to New Valencia Hall attn: BACORR; 625 Larkin St., Suite 202; San Francisco, CA 94109; with Jan. 24th endorsement in the memo line.
3. Help publicize and bring people to the counter-protest on Saturday, January 24, 2009! Please help distribute leaflets, call or email as many contacts as possible to let them know that we will meet at 10:30 a.m., (to the right of Justin Herman Plaza at the Music Concourse, at Stuart and Market Streets) in San Francisco. Wear green, bring signs, and defend women’s right to choose!
Email bacorrinfo@yahoo.com, or visit www.BACORR.org for more info.
BACORR stands for: free, accessible abortion on demand; no forced sterilizations; universal healthcare; pre- and post-natal care and childcare for all; safe and accessible contraceptives; an end to discrimination against people of color, queer, immigrant, and youth communities; embracing (not controlling or denying) sexuality; providing reality-based sex education in our public schools, and more. Fight back with BACORR!
In solidarity,
